If your password is not working, then either you are typing your password wrong or your wallet file has been corrupted. You would need to restore from your 12 word seed phrase.
If you don't have your 12 word seed phrase... then you cannot restore the wallet and your coins are effectively lost.
Justo to check: Is all the data folder needed for backup or just the wallet file itself is good for backups?
If you have your 12 word seed phrase, you do not need to backup any files. Your entire wallet can be easily restored from the 12 word seed phrase.
If you still want to make backups of your wallet(s)... then only the actual wallet file(s) is required, you don't need the whole data folder.
