I'd like to read every one of my unread posts since my last visit but the volume is incredible, can't we demand some proof of work prior to posting

I know what you mean.But, you can do this: Click 'profile' up near the top > then in modify profile click 'Ignore Boards Preferences' and turn off the ones that don't interest you.
