My problem is that the linux wallet [1] is currently just an .exe file, which seems not right. My goal is to install a wallet on a headless linux machine.
Did someone tried succeed building the wallet from source [2]?

Building the wallet from source works (tried on Ubuntu 14). You might have to provide execute permission for leveldb folder explicitly before starting the build, apart from installing all the dependencies.My problem is that the linux wallet [1] is currently just an .exe file, which seems not right.
