yes of course but you you should have btc first to buy eth. i am not yet trying to buy eth directly with fiat because i have btc. btw, if you want to buy eth, i think you can install jaxx or coinomi and send your btc to that wallet so you can buy directly the eth and then you can hold it for a while.
You can buy it directly. I bought .5ETH the other week from coinbase.
