Yeah, but you expect every node in your network to be able to download huge blocks in microseconds?  There's a reason satoshi went with 10 minutes.  As the network grows, everyone needs to keep up.  The block of WDC are mostly empty right now, if there were 10's of thousands of transactions in each block it will drive it to the ground.
