I think it has to do with the anonymity and the fact that it doesn't 'feel' like gambling with money that makes it so popular.
I think not only in the anonymity, since bitcoin is also used to gamble by it's value. In the early days of bitcoin as a currency used to bet many told me that is will be valued because of a gambling currency, but I think they are wrong, still they are used in gambling.
