Can someone please clarify: what happens with the Bittrex IO coins during the shift/fork to DIONS? Are they going to be secure, or what is the suggested approach for handling his coins during the fork?

I'm guessing he means the DIONS countdown clock from https://www.iocoin.io/
From what I understand they have already prepared Bittrex for the upgrade and will work with them to make sure everything goes smoothly. Coins should be safe to keep in Bittrex.
If you have your funds in Bittrex, as far as the fork to DIONS is concerned, the team will be working with Bittrex to ensure the safe move to the new chain. However, its always a good idea to leave your funds in your own wallet. If you need help with that, reach out to the team members on slack, discord or telegram
