Coins101 decided to start from scratch with Helium.

The cloned-from-darkcoin current Spreadcoin code is a copy of the Bitcoin 0.8.X codebase which was obsoleted by the massive refactoring and reorganisation done by the Bitcoin development team in migrating to Bitcoin Core (0.9 and up). Close reading of the comments around the release of Bitcoin 0.10 reveals a huge amount of relief (from the Bitcoin dev team) in managing to escape unscathed from the variety of obscure-but-real potential exploits in the older codebase. Initialising the Helium project with anything other than a clone of Bitcoin Core 0.10 or later could/would have been argued as irresponsible.

If SPR was worth saving, believe me...the old SPR team would have done.

Pretty much all of Mr Spread's innovations (that made Spreadcoin cool and groovy back in 2014) have long since been adopted/abandoned/overtaken by other altcoin groups. C'est la vie. From a development perspective, the only remaining value is in (what remains of) the original pro-social and supportive community that gathered around Mr Spread.

I find it instructive to note that groups of dissenters have responsibly chosen to offer the SPR community an alternative rather than to disruptively challenge the primacy of the extant SPR development programme.

Cheers
