You can look for a project with a long-term sustainable roadmap that actually delivers on that roadmap,
that way you're still not 100% certain, but at least you will force the scammers to do a lot more work to get to your money.

The other approach is risk mitigation: invest your money in different projects that you closely monitor, you cannot completely avoid risk, but spreading makes the impact smaller.
