I think it's a hard time now for a brand new social media to penetrate the market. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn has its own "color". The second layer : Path, Foursquare/ Swarm, G+ and many more. Ofcourse they improve to stay lasting. I have no idea about future social media platform or something. It must be very-madly hard for new comers.
