Well forking Bytecoin was plain stupid. And at moment that was announced I said it in this thread. Just check first pages.

But people still showered this genius with $40 millions.
My friend, you must know by now that the price of a coin is not only related to the technical superiority, if that was the case, Bitcoin wouldn't be number one right now, not even top 10, with it's horribly slow transactions and crazy high fees. The price of the coin is directly proportional to how many people know about it, plain and simple.
And by combining the tried-and-tested Monero code base with high publicity, we've got a winner imo.
