Do I need to forward port 9982? Or did I not put enough info in my command like adding a user or password? (coinbase address ommited)

I was having the same issue. You can mine directly from the qt wallet by going to the debug console and entering: setgenerate true -1
Would appreciate anyone's help with the minerd batch file and the conf file for the wallet, as well.
