I think the one thing people are overlooking is that Silk Road violates the forum policy of no illegal activity. Silk Road is clearly illegal regardless of your personal opinions on its operations. Although this will leave a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths - it was the right thing to do for the preservation of the community as a whole.
The discussion was about SR, not about illegal activity. Perhaps SR facilitated illegal activity but discussion of it is legal (in America, anyway). There is no legal foundation to say "SR is illegal." Under American law, only actions are illegal. It would be more logical to say that discussion of the thefts from Mt Gox are prohibited here.
In almost every case of suppression, tyrants cite the lager good, the safety of the nation, the sanctity of the larger group as the reason for suppression and the reason that laws against tyranny should be ignored. Just this one time. For the greater good. Once the danger is passed, we''l be back to warm and fuzzy just like the old days.
This site reminds me that a large fraction of "libertarians" I have met are fascists wearing the clothes of liberty. They just want to lord it over others like most people do, they just use a different deceptive language to hide it.
