I won't be able to check my PC for a while in a few months.. What happens if I dont update the client when its neccesary?
Nothing! The wallet.dat file is important, just keep it.
Just dont forget to encrypt your wallet.dat and compress it with a password. I would make at least 2 copies of it and store in a safe location.

Made 1 back-up but 2 is better, not to mention that forgetting my password would be terrible
