We got confirmation from Coinomi that they upgraded the wallet to Excalibur so you should be ok.
But if you want to be 100% sure we would recommand to keep your coins on your local QT-Wallet, and to backup your keys.

I think for my own peace of mind I'll download the official Excalibur wallet for Mac and send them off there for a few days holiday
As a relative newbie to all of this, is it OK to transfer them back the next day or wait a few days ? I could also transfer them to Poloniex or Cryptopia for a day or two I suppose.

It's ok for the fork on coinomi. The wallet was uptodated several weeks ago. No problems...
