I'm wondering if there's a way to tone down the miner a bit so that I can watch a movie. Otherwise I will just be able to mine when I am sleeping! 
Intensity is usually the parameter you'd want to adjust for this kind of problem. Try lowering it down. You might also want to try other miners like claymore and see whether the desktop is more responsive when you mine with them.
