In the modern world, any software older than 2 years is indeed old and can hardly be used to measure the effectiveness of modern apps.
Actually, you're not exactly correct as the modern hardware hasn't gone too much forward in terms of performance. Although, power consumption per FLOPS has gone down quite significantly.
