Can anyone explain what the scrypt algorithm is for? PoS you "mine" by being a masternode. How do you get 2500 coins? Can you mine this using cpu/gpu/asic at all?

There are way cheaper and way more expensive coins and yes it is a lot of money.
The price was set by the market. There was No ICO. No Pre-sale. Whatever is the price now, it's because that's how people value the coin.
$5000 may be expensive for you as you see the coin, but the market (people) decided this is its valuation right now. There are people willing to buy at this price, and people willing to sell at this price.
