Bitcoin has the community that no other coin has behind it, really. It also still has the mostly open development that it had from the day it was made and released to the world. These other offshoots are just forks that often have little more to offer vs Bitcoin and aren't worth the time for people to try and mine it or whatever else can be done. It also could limit those who actually have control over the coin's direction and they might really narrow down the amount of users who can get in on the coin.

I'd put money on most forks just being ways for the "devs" to make money off of people who are also looking to make money. Not even "altcoins" in the same definition we have, more like poor copies of Bitcoin overall.
