In fact, this will not bring any harm or benefit to the coin. If the community leaves the mining - their place will be taken by others and will sell coins in the same way.
What do you think about the update btcz from equihash to lyra2z? This variation of the zero protocol is much more progressive, more energy efficient, has purse protection, supports both POS and POW mining.
Now there is such a trend that many investors prefer systems with POS. Because they allow investors to get their % in anticipation of the growth rate, while on the system with POW they just pay for someone else's mining. Look at a bunch of new shitcoins on the neoscript - they all are more popular for investors than the BTCZ because they support POS and POW. Look at the Zcoin - its rate go to the moon after adding POS.
And POS really contributes to decentralization. Most of the miners accumulate on a small number of pools, while the POS nodes prefer to work solo because of the safety of their own coins.
In addition, the lira2z algorithm is much easier to integrate into the wallets of exchanges, all exchanges that support lyra2v easily accept lira2z.
I agree that there is a sort of "trend" to adopt POS. About upgrading BTCZ to lyra2z... this is something I am curious about (need more reading). Maybe bitcoinZ-pod could give some words. (this would be a change in BTCZ fundamentals...)
