Was this a withdrawal from Bittrex? I've noticed before that they pay thousands of dollars more fee than needed for each of their transactions.
I don't really understand their business decision when it comes to paying fees, they probably do this at least 100 times per day, that's half a million dollars

I do, they are in bed with top 5 mining pools to spam the network and bump the fees, they would earn them back with 7-12 extra Bitcoins in fees for each block.
