I was looking at buying some DIVI's. How do you set up a master node, are the different categories of nodes just based on the number you hold in your wallet?

Masternodes will be available after mainnet launch next year, right now DIVX is just a place holder. If you hold more than 1,000 DIVX in a wallet where you own your keys, you receive weekly airdrops(it's random, but on average once per week) till the launch. This is in order to encourage people to buy and hold now and not wait till Q2 2018. For me personally, an even better reason is because the price only seems to be going up, and I'd rather buy it when it's cheaper. The different categories are based on the number of coins you have, yes. More information about the airdrops as well as masternodes can be found here:
