If the private key is lost, it means that you have lost the bitcoin assets forever, which many people have lost in the past. 
Damn that must indeed really suck, since bitcoins is really expensive, wouldn't it be prudent to store your private keys in a very secure location where you wouldn't easily loss all the money that you have stored in your wallet.
