Well, that measure could have some effect. However, since the DMD community has several high ranked members, a warning about how to use smerit could be necessary. Already the META section is filled with people who has gotten red trust from DT members for having rewarded "wrong" posts or rewarded a post with "to many" smerits. There are also a lot of threads about why certain posts have gotten "that" many merits. I suppose smerits have to be used with extreme caution.
Somehow, a duck pond comes to mind, but since ducks in general are not particularly power-seeking or greedy such a metaphor would only be insulting to the ducks.
