It's fine (very good in fact) to do some non profitable mining in order to learn more about it.  It's just that your laptop is not a good PC to be mining with. Laptops typically cannot handle the heat very well and best case scenario is you shorten the lifespan by a significant bit... or you fry it. If this is a laptop that you need to use daily for non mining things it's just not worth the risk.  If you have access to any kind of desktop, even one that's 5-6 years old from Dell/HP etc it would be a better option if you just want the learning experience.
