.Bitcoin is, at the moment, the best attempt to solve the Bizantine problem: none could come up with a better solution.
I've always argued that when speaking of the Byzantine problem the first thing that comes into my mind is a 51% attack rather coordination.
As for inventions...I could live without a mobile phone, a computer, facebook or paypal as I did in the past ... but a fridge? That would be a problem.
In the last century probably the greatest ones were vaccines but nobody talks about them while they did save millions from death.
