Wow, lots of information - definitely more than I ever would have imagined.  But it all makes sense now.  I've discovered that the "magic number" of BEs in the Satechi is only 5.  I'm running a few more off other ports, and added some to my laptop.  This should suffice for now, until I can come up with a better solution.
