I think God is a male. The thing is, it is mentioned in the bible that when God first created man, it is in accordance to His image and likeness, thus Adam first came. I think God has thought of a way for man to multiply, that's why He created another human which is in a form of female, and that is Eve. As a catholic, that's what I believe.
