Similar situation with other countries, SEC always warn the risks on investing in cryptocurrency and as this will possibly be used in money-laundering activities. Government meetings has been called and the federal government has plan of exploring the marketplace of cryptocurrency because they are suspecting that bitcoin is equivalent to the so-called "Swiss bank account". If ever it will be regulated it will be in a state-by-state basis.
