There are a few ways that I know.
1) You can pre-mine some currency and the sell the rest, and then sell when it reaches a convenient value.
2) You can create tokens and sell part of them. Then sell the rest once they reach a value you like.
3) You can sell all tokens and provide a service (like pre-selling a service).
