The best idea is as always: keep your coins/tokens in a wallet where you hold the private key from, the most secure way is to keep them on a hardware wallet like Ledger Nano S, the NEON wallet works great with the Ledger!

Please I want ask, is it only the hardware wallet needed to qualify somebody for the airdrop or any other thing else?

It doesn't matter if you have a hardware wallet or not, you will receive the airdrop if you use the NEO GUI or NEON wallet, and some exchanges support the airdrop too.
A hardware wallet is just the safest way to store your NEO.
