Why not if you dont have any bitcoin then by working in alternate coins ico will give you an opportunity to start your journey and directly or indirectly it gonna support btc if you support other crpyto currencies.
How? BTC is well know for one more thing that is it can be cashed easily . People do trade with alternate coins but when they are in thw real deal they exchange it to the btc. So basically you are investing in btc.
And alt coins also possess high risks but you need to study about coins finance power and history to judge its value is it worth or not.
I dont mind supporting alternate crypto currencies. DECENT token is a prime example of being profitable as a alternate crypto.
