Like looking at the aspect of BTC's legality, which is often attributed to location or place, in short, in a global context it is both legal and illegal, and in specific place it could be solely legal or illegal. This is the same thing for your query, on a global context it is both thriving and banned, depending on a the place. It will never be banned, not unless the entire Governments that constitute every single nation on the planet, unite and vote together to totally ban the bitcoin. But until that International consensus from all governments it would be impossible to ban or kill the bitcoin, although it might be banned in some nations, not all nations would. so that would depend on a global consensus from all governments, a single government could, but that doesn't mean it  is the case for every single nation.
