Do you have new build? Old too slowly.
wallet v1.7.1.0 is indeed taking 50 min to start on my computer, but then everything is ok
I've now upgraded to 1.7 and I'm syncing from a single peer. Quite effortless, I expected I'd have to sync from scratch (I don't have blockchain backups from prior to the death block in 2014!) but 1.7 picked up the fork point and is properly syncing.
