A problem is that Cyprus and the EU ended up imposing a border on its people in the form of capital controls. An area with no frontiers suddenly had them and had two different kinds of Euro - the Cyrpus kind and the non Cyprus kind.  Those kinds of stressors can't be maintained for long without issues.
