The Terracoin Foundation took over TRC in 2016 and we added a number of features including masternodes and decentralized governance.  Masternodes are nice for the passive rewards, but the real improvement is decentralized governance.  This allows masternode owners to vote on proposals for a variety of things like the future of the coin, or marketing stuff.  You can see past proposals here: https://services.terracoin.io/oldproposals
