Possibly also just a "bad server" that wasn't updating properly... I think the fact that you got connected to a different server and everything started working supports this theory.

As for leaving it running for weeks... Generally, a simple shutdown and restart of Electrum can fix a lot of network issues. That sort of thing fixes like 99% of most IT related issues! haha
