To protect your funds being stolen it's better to buy hardware wallet. If you can't afford to buy hardware wallet then a more recommended method is to run your MEW offline on your PC without an internet connection. Visit the official website of MyEtherWallet download latest release of MEW from Github then move the folder to your offline PC. Then create your new wallet offline and save your private keys & JSON file. If you want to check your balance always check from etherscan don't check via signing from your private keys. If you want to send funds you can send via offline PC but you need an online PC also to broadcast your transaction on the internet. Since you will now always use mew offline so your private keys aren't exposed to the internet & your wallet will be safe from hackers.
