I can see a bunch of mix opinions here. I have been betting for the last few years and have managed to make some decent money with that. It usually depends upon how you play and what you invest. Obviously, its not a beginner's game I would say. I have seen beginners coming in and investing huge money on the go. But I do not prefer that way. When I started, I just invested a small amount to see how it goes. I was fortunate enough to play safe and when that amount was multiplied a few times in a while, I used only that amount further you know. I have learned a lot of things this way and the overall experience has been pretty good for me 
Pretty good for you but would be very bad for other and thats how gambling works.If someone able to make money then many gamblers do lost up money too.Its just a cycle and good for you that gambling isnt the cause on losing money. Gambling can never be safe or even we do say playing safe on it wont really guarantee you that you wont able to experience defeat. Just be smart on getting out on profits and dont let to lose those amounts back into gambling sites.There are too many opinions and most of them are negative, but thats just because people don't understand gambling. They come with high hopes and without knowledge about gambling and risks involved. Gambling isn't just one game, there are many gambling games ans each of them needs different knowledge and approach. People enter with big amounts and when they lose they cry about it, they blame casino and everyone else except their stupidity.
Gambling shouldn't be safe, you need to have experience and to know how games works and only then you have some kind of chances to win, with just big wish and big money nobody can do much. Here we talk about skilled gambling games, for luck games there are different strategies and luck is big factor.
Anyway I respect first comment and I agree with that, its possible to make money with gambling if you know how. People lose because they get into without knowing in what they get into. They should start low and learn more first before rising bets.
