What would e PERFECT is if I could select a drop dow box by type of hashing ... then the coins were listed top to bottom in order of totl hash rates for the network ...
I want to try solo mining for a week for the hell of it and find a block on my own .. Yeah I know I won't get anything with a GTX970 - but it's a down week ... and I want to have fun

Seem you are a block-reward hunter, I know it, and I can feel it. Same as my feel when I was doing my first solo mining with Peercoin (PPC), a long time ago.
Of course, the thing that you are looking at first must be Network Hashrate.
I also not yet find that kind of website that gives us new-born coins info with all those kind info needs. For now, stay on (ANN) thread would be better. And then how to knows the amount of Network Hashrate or Difficulty? Some block explorer may show it, or you may need to build a private mining pool at your local machine, some mining pool software would show that two info when you add that coin to that pool.
