because life is harsh and we rely on so much everyday just to survive. its easy to fall out of the rat race, suddenly living life without purpose, with no money means no food, no shelter, no medicine, when life literally becomes too painful to live the alternative starts to sound appealing.

I agree with @isaac, I remember reading about very high youth suicide rates in Japan due to the strict high expectations placed on you combined with a lot of isolation (70 deaths/day/avg). A lot of seniors will take their own life if they feel they have become a burden to their family or are in financial distress.

We are so competitive and it is never good enough.

Also, The 'iGen' generation is terrifying. They don't seem to have any grasp on reality and are seriously lacking in 'real-life' social skills. No interest in getting a job or career, just posting shit on YT / Facebook.
Who knows how well they manage in the coming years.
