Passive cooling on cards?!

Mine are not passive cooled, simply sapphire r9 280x "dual-x" cards. I have to run the fans at 100% to keep them at ~75c at 1080/1500 I13. I plan on burning the fans out, because they will at 100%, and replacing with watercooling. Lots of the non-ref 280x cards are the same non-ref design, kinda hoping someone comes out with a new block, against all odds.
Those Dual-X coolers are terrible for mining and barely cut it when gaming.
To make matters worse, the memory thermal pad(s) on my 7870xt's was keeping the hsf from sitting flush with the chip.
Yeah, not at all impressed. I wasn't expecting much though, these things run stupid hot. I bought the cheapest expecting to watercool
I plan on taking these apart to measure some stuff soon, Kinda curious if redoing them might make them a few degrees cooler. I think I can make a heatkiller block fit with some slight modification though, if that doesn't work.
Repasting knocked off a few degrees with mine. The Gelid coolers took it down another 15-20C.
