We have just as much as a chance of reaching "The Singularity" as we have of reaching another Dark Age, IMO.  We don't know enough about parallel universes, extra dimensions, AI, etc. to know what is, and isn't possible yet.  I just prefer to take the most pessimistic stance, so I'm not disappointed
