I ended up waking up this morning to find one stick that had been operating at 2.2GH/s showing 0.29GH average speed, apparently locking up hours ago.  Hopefully I won't have to end up rewiring the reset line to a relay controlled by the serial port to manage these things remotely - but with all the problems with these things, It's seeming plausible.
