Well if you say families you probably work to provide them with material goods. So in practice you work for money but you choose who to give it to. So as I understand people work for better life in general for them or their loved once. But some times you can over work yourself and that can affect your health negatively so that can be counter productive. In my opinions passive income is a way to go.
