I always say that we can't talk generally because the coins are not the same some of them are profitable and some of them are not, some times the profit from altcoins is more than the profit from bitcoin, so you should be careful and do your research about every coin that you went to sell.
You're right with this analysis, all altcoins are not the same and they do not move in the same pattern and it could be possible that some of the altcoins you are holding is headed for a dead end so that means that selling off such coins even at a loss is the right thing to do even if you are selling at a loss so you don't end up losing all your money you put in entirely.
