Is it possible for the thread owner to prevent anyone posting?
Yes, they can easily lock a thread. Look for a lock sign (either in front of the thread title [while viewing a board] or at the upper left corner of a thread):Direct link of the SS
Also the thread you're trying to post in, might be on a section that limits users (based on their ranks):
- You must be at least a Jr Member to post in Serious Discussion, and a Full Member to post in Ivory Tower.
