My logic here is that if this script is making money then he wouldn't have any need to sell the script to make extra money.

Ask him if he is willing to use an escrow service here on the forum. You pay the escrow service, then test the script for 2 weeks. If it generates a profit like he claims then you can instruct the escrow service to release the funds to the seller. If not, then they can refund you.
