i'm not an atheist but I have seriously considered being one. I was born into a christian family. In Nigeria, we have conservative Christians and liberalism. The conservatives had more strict christian practices than the liberals. We got converted from Catholicism to conservative Christianity. Mum became an enthusiast and was forcing everyone to adhere to the teachings in church but to my utter amazement she was not capable of keeping all the laws. to worsen it all I was sent to a missionary school owned by a conservative church where we were bullied into adhering to those teachings while our instructors will failed before our eyes to keep the same principles they had punished us for. I felt Christianity was a joke and wanted to try Islam. I was just waiting for an opportunity to leave home to where I can join Islam without the knowledge of my family members.
Finally, the opportunity came. I got admission to study in the university. I proposed that on getting to the university, I will join the Muslim community instead of Christians. However, on getting to the university I saw something that marveled me, Christians both conservatives and liberals worshiping God for a different reason. Prior to this time we have worshiped God for fear of going to hell but here are people worshiping God for their love for him and they were more consistent in keeping the commands of God and they didn't criticize nor mock those who were inconsistent, they rather encouraged them to keep up in order to repay God for his kindness and love to humanity. Moreso, I saw the power of God practically displayed in their midst as were told in the bible and in our churches back home. I was moved to reconsider my thoughts. I joined them and I started seeing transformations in my life and today I am a conservative Christian believer.
So in my thoughts I will say atheist were not opportuned to see the other side of things that is why they are filled with prejudice for religion. They let the weakness they saw in people inform the basis for their conclusion. Had I not had a second may be I would have been an atheist with so much indignation for Christianity or every religion.
