What happened to QRK? Why has the price shot up so much recently?

Popularity. Marketing.

There's a lot more that can be done. Only if there are more devs.

That's very vague.

Why has the popularity suddenly increased?
How has the marketing changed recently?
Any recent news to point out?
Has the difficulty spiked up?
Why?
Is there a new CPU miner out there?
GPU miner completely outperforming CPU miners?

This doesn't happen randomly:

I am not involved with Quark officially, but here are my attempts at answers:

The popularity of lots of Alts has increased, quark is a fast and secure Alt and therefore has drawn in interest.  It reaches its end game of being transaction only quite soon, meaning no more inflation.  It's great to send, I find it is sent and confirmed in about 2 mins.

The marketing has increased.  Bill Still, a famous economist, posted a youtube video about Quark predicting $ parity.  Others on this board are working to set up apps and payment systems using quark.

There was talk of changing the algorithm to momentumPOW like PTS, I don't know what is happening with that now.

Difficulty is massively higher now, it was below 100, now it is about 2000.
I don't know of a new CPU miner that is better, though some claim better results.

GPU mining also seems to be just rumour.
